Voices of Change
Description
An account of the resource
Activists and organizers all across Texas engage in meaningful work that is often not given enough recognition. The Voices of Change oral history project seeks to have conversations with community leaders and people who are part of grassroots movements about their background, goals, and commitment to making a difference. This collection aims to create a more inclusive Texas by amplifying underrepresented voices and giving space for marginalized communities to tell their stories on their own terms.
Oral History
A resource containing historical information obtained in interviews with persons having firsthand knowledge.
Summary
This interview is with Moureen Kaki, an Palestine solidarity activist with Jewish Voice for Peace in San Antonio, TX. Moureen describes her experiences of seeing the ills of settler-colonialism in Palestine first-hand, and how that direct exposure as a Palestinian-American has catalyzed her work. She talks about the politicization of her identity as a Palestinian, and of Muslim identities as well, and how she has felt uncomfortable sharing her identity and culture with others at different points in her life. Moureen also discusses misconceptions she would like to clear up about Palestinian solidarity and the nature of the conflict.

Summary
This interview is with Neda Hamid, a Palestinian Muslim and recent Human Development and Family Sciences graduate from the University of Texas at Austin. Neda speaks to Islam being a very important part of her life and the subsequent ramifications of being a highly visible hijab-wearing Muslim woman. Neda also navigates a shift in her leftist political identity and how being surrounded by progressive-minded people in college was a stark contrast to her high school experience in Baytown, Texas, where she was born and raised. During college, Neda was highly involved with the Liberal Arts Refugee Alliance (LARA) as well as the Palestine Solidarity Committee and can confidently say that she’d like to tie her life’s work to helping her local refugee community in whatever capacity possible.
