Voices of Change
Description
An account of the resource
Activists and organizers all across Texas engage in meaningful work that is often not given enough recognition. The Voices of Change oral history project seeks to have conversations with community leaders and people who are part of grassroots movements about their background, goals, and commitment to making a difference. This collection aims to create a more inclusive Texas by amplifying underrepresented voices and giving space for marginalized communities to tell their stories on their own terms.
Oral History
A resource containing historical information obtained in interviews with persons having firsthand knowledge.
Summary
This interview is with Carrie Holley-Hurt, a seminarian studying at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Carrie tells the story of her history of activism and involvement, including her current work tracking and speaking out against anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in Texas. She talks about how parenting a queer child has informed her fight for equal rights and gender affirming care for trans people. Heather also shares her experiences of both admiration for her child and fears for their safety.

Texas Freeze
Description
An account of the resource
Texas Freeze is a unique collection created in the immediate aftermath of the polar vortex that devastated the lives of many Texans in February 2021. This community-based collection hears from working class people of color, community organizers across Texas, and essential workers. Many Texans were not prepared for the winter storm and felt abandoned by our elected officials, leaning on mutual aid networks to survive.
The Texas Freeze has fostered conversations about climate change, the electric grid system, emergency management, and the impact on underprivileged communities. Although the warm sunshine has returned, the storm’s remnants will haunt parts of the state for months or even years to come. The storm’s impact on finances, health and homes will not simply fade away.
Oral History
A resource containing historical information obtained in interviews with persons having firsthand knowledge.
Summary

Heather shares the story of her experiences living with and treating her epilepsy, including discerning the choice to pursue seminary and fighting for the legalization of medical marijuana. She talks about how the Texas Freeze kept her from receiving shipments of her medication, putting her at risk of seizures. She also speaks about her experiences volunteering to distribute water and home necessities with her church during the freeze.
